We've just gotten word from our Twitter followers that visionary Director Satoshi Kon passed away this Tuesday. The news came via Twitter post from the founder of Madhouse Studios Masao Maruyama, Tuesday night Japan time, who announced the sudden death of a director there, but initially failed to mention who.

Kon began his career with manga, but eventually decided to try his hand in the anime industry. His ideas proved successful, as he directed a string of hit films from the start: Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika etc. Most of the fandom will remember him for his engaging stories, surreal visual directions, and thought provoking characters. I personally will always remember him for his Film Tokyo Godfathers, my absolute favorite of his movies.

At the present time, Kon was working on a new film titled "Yume-Miru Kikai", or "The Dream Machine", which will be it's American release name. First photos of the project can be seen HERE. It's best described in Kon's own words: "It’ll be like a 'road movie' for robots."

Satoshi Kon was 47.

What was your favorite film from Satoshi Kon? Mine is definitely Tokyo Godfathers. The character development is amazing, and you come to feel so much for each main character as the movie goes on, as they find trouble and learn more about each other. Truly a great, great, GREAT film I think every anime fan should see. He'll be greatly missed.

I'm going to have to rent Tokyo Godfathers. I enjoyed Satoshi's work, but never saw this. It is too bad, he died so young.

This news makes me so terribly sad.

Tokyo Godfathers is my go-to DVD around "that" holiday every year.

This is very sad news as I loved his movies. My favorite is a tie between Perfect Blue and Tokyo Godfather. The world has lost a great director.

Very sad news. He was a pretty cool dude. That one he was working on sounds like it will be great. Good Bye Kon!

Very sad to hear this. We've lost a lot of good talent in anime these past two years. He and his work will be missed.

This does suck and Anime News Network is reporting it was cancer. Having family who has dealt with and lost members due to it I know much it sucks.

Very sad news. I enjoyed Tokyo Godfathers very much. It was a wonderful story. I also liked his work on Paranoia Agent. The article I saw said it was pancreatic cancer and that he was only 46. I feel for his family. He will be missed by many. RIP sir!
